Tunnel Congestion Causes Accidents in Portsmouth, VA

By John Cooper, Portsmouth Car Accident Lawyer

Congestion is an everyday problem in Portsmouth, Virginia. Every morning in the week commuters face back-ups waiting for the I-264 Downtown Tunnel and the US 58 Midtown Tunnel to reach Norfolk.

In the evenings the tunnels back up in the opposite direction in Norfolk, VA.

Congestion causes impatience and aggression and stop and start conditions that are conducive to accidents.  I see numerous fender benders in and around these tunnels on the Portsmouth and the Norfolk sides. I also see accidents with serious injuries.

In this video my colleague Jim Hurley talks about the human cost of congestion in Hampton Roads cities such as Portsmouth, Norfolk, Hampton and Newport News.

Even at low speeds a rear-end accident can cause serious back and neck injuries.

Portsmouth Police Step Up DUI Enforcement Over St Patrick’s Weekend

By John Cooper, Portsmouth, VA Personal Injury Lawyer

Over the St Patrick’s Day weekend police departments often see a spike in DUIs.

In Portsmouth police will be out in full force in an attempt to deter those who might be tempted to get in their cars and drive,

Police spokeswoman Jan Clark said 25 police officers have been detailed to look out for drunk drivers. As a Portsmouth DUI accident injury lawyer I see at first hand the terrible consequences of drunk driving.

St Patrick's Day is celebrated across the world - this party is in Tokyo

Clark said officers will conduct patrols at all hours of the day and night from Friday, March 15th through Sunday, March 17th.  The officers will focus on locations where impaired drivers are more likely to be driving.

“The aggressive alcohol enforcement is grant funded by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles,” said Clark in a press release.   “The Portsmouth Police, Strategic Traffic Unit and assigned officers will be working in an overtime capacity.   Citizens will see marked and unmarked police vehicles, along with police motorcycles conducting traffic stops and checkpoints in their neighborhoods. “

Police are reminding those who have been drinking to designate a driver, and to make sure that you take the keys when a friend has had too much to drink.

“Host responsible parties and immediately stop serving alcohol to any guest who is displaying obvious signs of intoxication,” Portsmouth police said in the press release.

Drunk drivers kill and maim hundreds of people in Virginia every year. On average there are more than 8,000 DUI accidents in Virginia every year.

If you have been hurt in a car crash caused by a drunk driver you should contact a Portsmouth, VA injury lawyer.
